APPLICATION
Bentonite is a clay mineral predominantly consisting of the mineral Montmorillonite mixed with some related minerals like Nontronite and Beidellite. These are three-layered Aluminosilicates with molecules of water between layers. For natural Sodium Bentonite, exchangeable sodium cations are predominant, rather than other cations like calcium, magnesium etc. Similarly in Calcium Bentonite, calcium cations are predominant. In fact, in all Bentonites available in the world, the sodium variety has high swelling and gelling properties along with good viscosity and liquid limit.
The Bentonite found in the Kutch region of India is of an igneous origin. It was formed millions of years ago, possibly from the volcanic ashes falling in stagnant saline water in semi-arid conditions. Due to the natural characteristics of these particular volcanic ashes, the chemical composition of this Bentonite is somewhat different from the Bentonite available in the rest of the world. Most of these deposits are of Natural Sodium Bentonite with higher iron content, which gives them their darker colour. Due to the very fine particle size, this Bentonite shows extra-ordinary swelling capacity and bonding powers. These differences makes the Kutch Bentonite most useful in various industries throughout the world.
IRON ORE
PELLETIZATION
Natural percentage of iron is much higher in Kutch Bentonite, which is ideal in isolating iron ore pellets with the maximum percentage of iron.
All cast iron, steel & malleable iron foundries are almost using Bentonite with cost efficient results. Kutch region is famous for a very good sodium Bentonite for casting industries. For continuous mould making also Kutch Bentonite is used successfully.
WATER WELL &
OIL WELL DRILLING
Less requirement of Bentonite is due to the special higher yield results in using less quantity of Bentonite for the same standard mud. The calcium Bentonite from the Kutch makes for some of the best bleaching days comparable. It is also better than any known bleaching days.
WATER PROOFING
The Kutch Bentonite is ideal for all water proofing uses as well as environment protection utilization due to its excellent filtration loss properties.

Lubricator /
thickener for drilling fluids. Along with polymers and lignite’s for viscosity
control. Their products serve a verity of function lubricating drill bits,
stabilizing well bores removing rock cuttings and improving drilling
efficiency. Drilling mud or drilling gel is a major component in the well
drilling process.
Drilling mud is
crucial in the extraction of drill cuttings during the drilling process. Bentonite when mixed with water, forms a fluid (or slurry) which is pumped
through the drill stem and out through the drill bit.
The Bentonite
extracts the drill cuttings from around the bit, which are then floated to the
surface.
The drilling mud or gel
also serves to cool and lubricate the drill bit as well as seal the drill holes
against seepage and to prevent wall cave-ins.

FIELD OF USES :
It has been finely balanced and believed to give
optimum result in oil well Drilling, tubewel drilling piling and grouting. This
type of Bentonite has high Gelling and swelling capacity. Small percentage of
this type of Bentonite Gives very viscos slurry and at the same time fluid loss
is most satisfactory.

The yield of a 15 cps apparent viscosity Bentonite distilled water
slurry mixed after 24hours shall be not less than 90 bbls. Per short ton (200
lbs) of Bentonite.

FLUID LOSS:
The api fluid loss of slurry containing 71gms of Bentonite in 100 mgs
distilled water mixed and aged 24hours shall not be greater than 15 mls.

FIELD OF USES :
METAL CASTING
Blended products to strengthen
foundry sand mould for casting auto parts, farm implements, rail-cars and home
appliances.
Bentonite serves as an
economical bonding material in the moulding process associated with the metal
casting industry.
Bentonite when mixed with
foundry moulding sand, forms a pliable bond with the sand granules. Impressions
are formed into the face of the Bentonite/sand mixtures molten metal is pored
into the impressions at temperatures exceeding at 2800 degree Fahrenheit.
The unique bonding
characteristics of Bentonite insures the durability of the mould during these
high temperatures. Once the process is completed, the Bentonite/ sand mould can
then be broken away from the castings face and reused.

IRON ORE PELLETIZING
(TACONITE PELLETIZING)
Clays to bond iron ore into pellets for steel production taconite, a low grade iron ore has been developed as an economic source for iron during processing. The taconite is ground into a very fine powder. The ground taconite is then mixed with small amounts of Bentonite which serves as a binder to the teconite. This mixture is processed into balls or pellets. The process is finished when these pellets are sintered in rotary kilns that gives the pellets a hard surface. The taconite pellets are easy to handle at this point and can be loaded into various containers for shipment to steel mills.
